IRIS is committed to providing seamless and secure data exchange, making it simple for clients to add the diabetic retinal exam into their existing workflow to help provide better patient care. “When my work is done, if I’ve done it correctly, you won’t even know it’s there,” joked Integration Innovator, Adam Diaz when describing the client benefit of integrating IRIS with their electronic health record (EHR). 

An EMR, or electronic medical record, is the collection of patient health information that is stored digitally. There are many advantages to using EMR software, such as reduced costs, streamlined billing and coding, and providing accurate and timely information about patients at the point of care. Today, the majority of healthcare providers utilize an EMR system, making the ability for new technologies to integrate crucial. 

The IRIS system is intended to integrate seamlessly into an existing organization’s infrastructure. The goal is to minimize negative impact on staff while providing a strategic differentiator for our clients. Implementations of healthcare IT are often invasive, but the intent of this process is to minimize invasion and provide a seamless integration between IRIS and one of an organization’s largest investments – their EHR (electronic health record). 

EHR integrations are the exchange of patient data between a healthcare vendor and a client’s EMR/EHR. In fact, EHR integration is a vital part of telemedicine and will impact aq practice’s patient treatment capabilities through quick, secure exchanges of information. During the EHR integration implementation process, one of IRIS’s integrators will conduct cadence calls with the client’s IT team to ensure the EHR integration built and running smoothly for go-live. There are six foundational steps to successfully integrating the IRIS platform with a client’s EHR, as identified below by Integrator, Dana Cloutet. 

  1. Define a client’s IRIS Clinical Order Workflow (including order specifications, results delivery and charges). 
  2. Provide interface specifications. 
  3. Establish interface and camera connectivity. 
  4. Customize data elements that are unique to each client. 
  5. Conduct testing. 
  6. Go live! 

 So, what’s the benefit? “The benefit is that IRIS orders, images, and results will automatically become part of their patient’s electronic health record,” explained Cloutet. Fellow Integrator, Jason Poynter added “It’s seamless. The client places an order in their system as normal, without any additional work, and the order shows up in the IRIS system.” 

Currently, Cloutet, Diaz, and Poynter make up the Integration Team at IRIS. Each bring with them an array of experiences and specialties, making for a highly- credentialed, innovative, and open-minded team. 

About the IRIS Integration Team: 

Dana Cloutet: 

Before coming to IRIS, Dana conducted software implementations for an EMR vendor. Additionally, she has worked on the IT Application and Integration Teams at multiple healthcare organizations including Ochsner Health System and St. Tammany Parish Hospital. She is a certified administrator in the Epic Bridges Enterprise Interfaces module as well as in the Cloverleaf Integration Engine. 

Adam Diaz: 

Adam’s career in the IT world began when he accepted an entry – level interface job at CPSI, an EMR company specializing in rural hospitals and clinics. During his time at CSPI, he learned programming, python and JavaScript which helped him earn the opportunity to work with HL7 interfaces. Adam worked his way up the ladder over the course of his time with CSPI until joining IRIS in the fall of 2018. Adam is a problem solver. One of the most rewarding parts of working on integrations at IRIS for him is the creative freedom he is given to find solutions for our customers. 

Jason Poynter: 

Jason’s tech career began when he joined the Air Force as a Computer Systems Operator. After fulfilling his enlistment duties with the USAF, Jason secured a job working with internet security and solutions. Having joined the team as the Support Solution Lead in 2014, Jason was one of IRIS’s first employees. In 2018, he began transitioning to his current role on the Integration team. The transition included acquiring a certification in Nextgen Mirth Connect Fundamentals, which he completed in 2019.
