How Diagnostic Telemedicine Helped a Primary Care Practice Increase DRE Compliance

An annual diabetic retinal exam (DRE) is vital to identifying (and sometimes reversing) sight-threatening eye disease. Like other healthcare organizations, Gateway Medical Associates is held accountable for ensuring its diabetic patients receive this required exam. But with more than 7,000 patients in their diabetic population and no means for ensuring compliance, Gateway physicians struggled to get these patients to visit their eye doctors and get tested.

So they decided to bring the test to their patients instead. Gateway partnered with the diagnostic telemedicine company IRIS to implement a telemedicine program for the DRE in eight of their clinics. Standardized workflows, supported by technology innovations, created a programmatic approach to operationalizing and institutionalizing the program in a primary care setting.

The result? Gateway Medican Associates improved its quality scores from 30% to nearly 90% in less than a year. In that time, physicians examined more than 4,800 of their patients for diabetic retinopathy. The DRE teleretinal program has increased engagement among physicians, specialists and patients, ultimately leading to better care outcomes.
